Stephanie Tubbs Jones College Fire Prevention Act passes in House

On September 23, 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Stephanie Tubbs Jones College Fire Prevention Act by an overwhelming vote. HR 642 was originally introduced by Congresswoman Tubbs Jones, a strong advocate for campus fire safety, who passed away in August from a brain aneurysm. Congressman Clyburn (SC-6) requested that the bill be renamed in honor of the Congresswoman and it passed by a vote of 365 to 51.

HR 642 will “establish a demonstration incentive program within the Department of Education to promote installation of fire sprinkler systems or other fire suppression or prevention technologies in qualified student housing and dormitories, and for other purposes.” It calls for the government to provide $100,000,000 per year for five years that schools will be required to provide a 50% match.

Unfortunately, there is no companion bill in the Senate and Congress is currently scheduled to adjourn within the next week, so the prospects of action in the Senate are limited.

On a related note, HR 6950 was introduced “to establish the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift of Life Medal for organ donors and the family of organ donors.” At this time the House is debating this bill.
