Sprinkler standard faces several revisions

Sprinkler standard faces several revisions

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. has proposed several changes to its Standard for Safety for Automatic Sprinklers for Fire Protection Service, including new sections on sensitivity and high-exposure temperature testing.

UL 199, still at its proposal stage, is a modified version of an older standard for automatic and open sprinklers. The Illinois-based testing organization seeks continued recognition of the standard by the American National Standards Testing Institute, a clearinghouse for information on standards.

Among the standard’s major revisions are the addition of a sensitivity test for quick-response sprinklers; a high-temperature exposure test for onoff sprinklers; and an increase in the number of samples needed for the operations test.

UL seeks comments on the revised standard for review prior to ANSI’s August deadline.
