Sacramento Metropolitan (CA) Fire District Orders 22 Pierce Quantum Vehicles

Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, received an order from Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (Sac Metro) in Sacramento County, California, for 22 Pierce® Quantum® fire apparatus. The purchase includes 20 pumper vehicles and two aerial tillers. The order is valued at $9.6 million, and delivery is scheduled to begin in March 2011.

“This order by Sacramento Metro signifies a resounding vote of confidence by a tremendous fire department and long-time Pierce customer,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Fire & Emergency. “It’s also an acknowledgement of our dealer – Golden State Fire Apparatus – for its outstanding service and support. ”

“By taking advantage of Pierce’s outstanding lease-to-purchase program, available through Oshkosh Capital, we are significantly upgrading our first-line fleet. And, we expect to substantially decrease our ongoing fleet maintenance costs as well as reduce vehicle downtime,” said Christian Pebbles, Sacramento Metro Fire Captain. “More importantly, the Quantum vehicles’ excellent performance, visibility, safety features and storage space will enhance response to our citizens and improve firefighter safety. It’s truly a win-win for our department and the many communities we serve throughout the county.”

The 20 Quantum pumpers will be customized to meet the unique needs of this California county. Each fire truck features a 500 hp engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, TAK-4® independent front suspension, 290 amp alternator, seating for six firefighters, air-actuated front steps, LED lighting package, roll-up doors and an EMS compartment inside the cab. The firefighting system includes a 1500 gpm pump, 500-gal. poly water tank, Husky® 12 foam system, 40-gal. foam cell, and a Control Zone™ pump panel.

The two Quantum 100-foot heavy-duty aerial tiller vehicles will be used to navigate narrow streets in and around residential and commercial areas. Each tiller features the TAK-4 independent suspension (front and rear), frontal impact protection, side roll protection system, LyfePulley rescue system, 500-lb. rated slide out trays, toolboards and adjustable shelves, telescoping scene lights, and a full complement of ground ladders.

Captain Pebbles added, “The Quantum vehicles represent the latest in advanced firefighting technology – yet we’ve paid homage to our region’s history and tradition with a classic firefighter bell on each and every vehicle.”

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is a special-purpose district that provides fire protection to the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County.
