Probe Into PA Digital Utility Meter Fires

Pennsylvania’s Public Utility Commission has waded into the controvery over the installation of new digital “smart” meters and the fires and meltdowns involving the devices.

The local FOX affiliate reports (http://bit.ly/QmH8n1) that the state agency is scrutinizing the installation of smart meters after a fire in a Buck’s County home two weeks ago. PECO–according to its Web site the largest electric and natural gas utility in Pennsylvania–is investigating this fire and eight other overheating incidents involving the new digital meters.

The commission has reportedly sent a letter to PECO asking about aspects of the installation process and the investigation.

PECO has placed the installation of 1.6 million smart meters on-hold while it investigates problems with the program.
