NFPA to Advise HUD on manufactured home standards

October 16, 2001 – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has selected NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) to administer a voluntary, consensus process that will provide recommendations to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to enhance federal manufactured home construction and safety standards and their related enforcement regulations.

Specifically, the agreement with HUD calls for NFPA to administer all phases of the project as part of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000. The project will include submitting candidates to the Secretary to serve on the consensus committee, providing technical and administrative support to the committee, and working with the committee as members develop recommendations on manufactured home installation standards and the related enforcement regulations. These recommendations will be forwarded to the Secretary for consideration and action. Under HUD guidelines, the consensus code committee will reflect a broad, but equal representation, of interest areas, including producers and manufacturers, consumer advocates, and public officials.
