New Jersey Firefighters Battle Fire at Vacant Commercial Building

The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department responded to a pair of fires in North Bergen today, including a two-alarm fire in a vacant commercial building, reports nj.com.

No one was injured in the one-alarm fire, which broke out in the basement of a 2.5-story residential building at 619 Columbia Ave. at 9:10 a.m., according to North Hudson Regional Fire Chief Frank Montagne.

The fire was put under control at 9:45 a.m. and determined to be the result of a dryer catching on fire. The fire was contained to the basement, only damaging the dryer, a nearby washing machine and some surrounding back wall, Montagne said.

At approximately 2:14 p.m., firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at a vacant one-story commercial building at 1701-13 75th St. in North Bergen. A small sign on the door said “North Bergen Piece Dye Works.”

The fire department did not enter the building, because the roof had multiple holes and it had been designated as a Level 3 HVB, meaning it may contain hazardous materials, North Hudson Regional Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Avillo said at the scene.

It could not immediately be determined if there were hazardous materials inside.
