National Fire Protection Association Conference & Expo Being Held June 9 to 12

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is getting ready for the annual NFPA Conference & Expo, June 9-12 in Las Vegas. Leading experts unite at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center for the most comprehensive educational event in fire, life and electrical safety, offering practical knowledge during more than 150 sessions and in-depth seminars. The expo features more than 300 solution providers showcasing cutting-edge exhibits with the latest technology in fire protection and electrical and life safety.

Life Safety for the Vegas High Roller Observation Wheel

Edward Kaminski, Fire Protection Engineer and Clark County Fire Prevention Bureau and David Codiga, Project Manager of the Vegas High Roller Project, host a special presentation on safety analysis conducted on the High Roller Observation Wheel including redundant power drive systems, external drive mechanism and quality control measures. Other topics of discussion include procedures for loading passengers under normal and emergency conditions and methods for emergency passenger extractions by Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Autism Awareness for First Responders

Elizabeth Larkin, Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Saint Paul Fire Department and John Sokol, Executive Director of the Pembroke Fire Protection District, present vital information related to Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as helpful tools and techniques for handling emergency situations effectively.

Creating A Community Wildfire Protection Plan

Donald Butz, Viejas Fire Chief of the RCD/Fire Safe Council of San Diego County and Sheryl Landrum, District Manager of the RCD/Fire Safe Council of San Diego County present a step-by-step plan for preparing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).

This year’s featured presentation “The 2013 Boston Marathon: How the Multi-Discipline, Multi-Jurisdiction Approach to Planning for the Marathon Affected the Response to, and Recovery From, the Bombings” is led by Kurt Schwartz,Undersecretary of the Homeland Security & Emergency Management. Schwartz will review the local, regional, and state planning process for the 2013 Boston Marathon and discuss the multi-discipline, multi-jurisdiction response to the bombings while highlighting the planning challenges, lessons learned, and best practices of the response to and recovery from the attack.

The NFPA will also release its anticipated annual Fire Fighter Fatality Report with a presentation discussing implications of the findings.
