•ROBERT R. RIELAGE has been named Ohio State Fire Marshal. The fire marshal is responsible for designing and presenting fire prevention programs, analyzing criminal evidence, modernizing and enforcing the Ohio Fire Code, investigating the cause and origin of fires and explosions, and training firefighters. The State Fire Marshal`s Office also includes the Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations.

•JOE SCHUMACHER has been appointed for the first paid chief of the Arvada (CO) Fire Protection District. A 10-year veteran of fire district, he will oversee all business, training, technical, planning, and operational activities of the 170-member department.

•LARRY GREENE, assistant fire chief of the Fullerton (CA) Fire Department, retired after 31 years of service. He served as training officer, paramedic coordinator, operations chief, and fire marshal. He became assistant fire chief in 1995.

•ROBIN PAULSGROVE, chief of the Arlington (TX) Fire Department, was elected chairman of the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs. An exclusive leadership organization, the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs includes chief fire executives from major cities around the world.

•HARRY R. CARTER, chief of the Newark (NJ) Fire Department, has retired after 25 years in the fire service. He served as commander of the training and hazardous materials divisions; executive officer of the community relations division, and as city-wide incident commander in the suppression division.

•KEVIN KEEGAN, a lieutenant with the New York (NY) Fire Patrol, has been named an honorary Knight Bachelor in the Order of Life Safety Servants (OLSS) of Operation Life Safety. The order recognizes fire service personnelmwho advocate fire safety. Lieutenant Keegan is a public speaker who annually talks to 40,000 schoolchildren on fire safety and prevention.

•BILL COMER, former chief of the Paterson (NJ) Fire Department, died at the age of 78. He joined the department in 1945 and was chief from 1984 to 1990.

•PAUL A. LEACH, founder of Jaffrey Fire Protection Company, died at the age of 80. He incorporated a Danish design for quarter-turn couplings, which led to the manufacture of many large-diameter appliances. He was a member of the Jaffrey (NH) Fire Department since 1941, serving as chief engineer between 1967 and 1986.
