M. H. Estepp Named Prince George’s County Chief

M. H. Estepp has been named chief of t he Prince George’s County, Md., Fire Department, succeeding Frank P. Briguglia, who died April 1.

Estepp was formerly deputy fire chief for operations. That position, second in command of the department, headed the bureaus of fire suppression, fire prevention, fire communications, and the emergency medical services division.

His career in the county fire service began in 1958, when he joined the Seat Pleasant Volunteer Fire Company, where he held various line offices. He was appointed to the career force in 1962.

After serving in the communications and fire prevention bureaus, he was promoted to captain in 1968 and was named chief of the bureau of fire prevention in 1971. He was named deputy fire chief in 1975. While in that position, he directed the modernization and reorganization of the department, including its communications center, which included laying the groundwork for computer-aided dispatching, expected to become operational within a year.

Salem Chief Named to State Judiciary Comm.

James A. Brennan, chief of the Salem, Mass., Fire Department , has been named by Governor Michael Dukakis to the Judicial Nominating Commission.

The commission was established by the governor immediately after he took office. It is responsible for nominating and screening candidates for the Massachusetts judiciary and for district court clerkships.

Brennan has been chief of the Salem Fire Department since 1961. He has also held several positions in various professional and community organizations and served on the city of Salem Code Review and Enforcement Committee.

Currently the secretary-treasurer of the New England Association of Fire Chiefs and director of the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, Brennan has served as chairman of the latter’s legislative committee and as president of the Essex County Fire Chiefs Association.

He will serve in the unpaid position until February 10,1979.

Fire Marshal Retires

Robert J. Ross retired on July 91 as Arizona’s first state fire marshal.

He began his career in April 1942 as a fire fighter in the Phoenix Fire Department. After being promoted through the ranks and serving 30 years, he retired as deputy chief and City of Phoenix fire marshal in August 1972 and was named state fire marshal in September of the same year.

During his six-year tenure, the office has expanded to a staff of five full-time deputies and over 100 noncompensary assistants.

American LaFrance School

More than 50 foreign and domestic fire department personnel attended a one-week service school on maintenance of fire apparatus at the American LaFrance plant in Elmira, N. Y., last April.

The school was the fourth one presented by American laFrance and consisted of 30 hours of instruct ion of which 4 1/2 hours were class room with the balance being hands on training. The school covered the Century Series apparatus.
