Two Indianapolis Firefighters Injured After Fall Through Roof

Firefighter Near Miss: Two Indianapolis Firefighters Injured After Fall Through Roof

By Rita Reith

Two firefighters were injured after falling through a roof while battling a fire in a vacant residence last night in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The firefighters were on the rear roof of the house when one firefighter fell through the roof and got caught on the beams, injuring his shoulder. The other firefighter reached out to grab him as he fell and injured his back trying to prevent him from disappearing into the heavy fire below.

Both firefighters remained on scene for the duration of the fire before being transported Eskenazi by Medic 11.

Firefighters were originally dispatched on a reported garage fire but on arrival found a two-story vacant double residence that was heavily involved in fire. After making a fast attack on the fire, command ordered evacuation as the high winds continued to push the fire ahead of the crews trying to battle it.

There were no working smoke detectors at the scene. The fire was under control in one hour.
