The Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department (IFD) kicked off the upcoming Fire Prevention Month with the 16th Annual Fire Safety Olympics held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. More than 900 first and second grade students spent the day engaged in fun while learning about fire and life safety, with activities including “Saving the Baby,” stop/drop and roll practice, escaping a simulated fire, practicing 911 calls, and more. With over 100 volunteers in attendance, each participant visited and hand on participated in at least five of the stations.

The event is part of an ongoing partnership between the IFD and sponsor State Farm Insurance. Since 2000, State Farm Insurance has been a proud sponsor and generous supporter of IFD and the Fire Safety Olympics. Thousands of Indianapolis area children have taken part in this event, which occurs every year in October to coincide with National Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10 ). Countless numbers of Indianapolis families have benefited from the education these children received at this event and brought home to their family.

The IFD continues its mission to provide service, safety, and education in an effort to eradicate fire related injuries and death. So far this year, the IFD has had two fire-related fatalities and approximately 20 fire-related injuries.  Fires are preventable. We care, and so should you. As we head into Fire Prevention Month, our messaging remains consistent and clear: Prevention, planning, and practice works.
