IAFC, NFPA Host Firewise Workshop

The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has announced that the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Firewise Program will offer as a pre-conference workshop their “Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone” seminar. Back for a second year by popular demand, the two-day session is taking place just prior to the 2010 Wildland Urban Interface Conference, on March 28-29 at the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino in Reno, Nevada.

This course has been described as a must for all and an eye-opener by many who have participated.  Some comments from last year’s attendees include, “It was directly applicable to my goals. It was informative, succinct and enjoyable.” Other participants stated, “It was very informative on the ‘new science’ about ignition of homes during a wildfire,” and “The ability to see and work with multiple points of view result in an excellent seminar.”

The course, which is ideal for seasoned fire professionals as well as those with less tenure, will be conducted by wildland fire experts Hank Blackwell and Pat Durland. The two-day workshop will cover myths of wildland/urban interface (WUI) fire, the history and context of WUI fire disasters, research and case studies, risk factors, how-to conduct and document an assessment, and more. Classroom exercises include performing home ignition zone evaluations and Q&A discussion. Participants will receive a workbook, presentations and a Certificate of Attendance with 1.6 CEUs.
