At 7 p.m. on March 22, Hagerstown (MD) city fire crews were alerted to the building fire. The battalion chief and first on scene units found heavy smoke and fire from a two story building with an attached warehouse. The building is made up of a furniture store on ground level, and residential apartments on the second floor.

Command ordered a second alarm almost immediately after arriving on scene. Firefighters proceeded with an interior attack until conditions deteriorated about 50 minutes into the incident. Evac tones were sounded and all crews exited the building, and a collapse zone was established.

Crews transitioned to exterior ops with multiple ladder pipes in operation. Once the heavy fire was knocked, a large amount of smoke filled the neighboring streets. Firefighters remained on scene all night chasing hot spots and performing overhaul and investigation.
