Ford Recalls 100,000 Hybrid Vehicles Over Fire Risk

According to a report from Digital Trends, car manufacturer Ford has recalled about 100,000 of its hybrid vehicles, including their Corsair and Escape SUVs as well as some Maverick compact pickups, from the model years 2020-2022 over a fire risk. Each vehicle features 2.5-liter hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric engines.

The report released by Ford indicated a crankshaft machining problem that can cause engine failure in these vehicles, which could lead to oil and fuel vapor leaking onto hot parts of the engine, sparking a fire.

The company said it has received 23 international reports of incidents where the engine failure caused a fire, although no injuries or deaths have been reported related to this issue. Ford confirmed that it has already resolved the issue at the manufacturing stage, so new vehicles coming off the production line no longer experience the problem.

Ford said that engine failure is very rare, with only 0.17 repairs needed per 1,000 vehicles. Ford will begin notifying affected owners on August 8.

The Michigan-based auto manufacturer also expanded another recall it announced in May 2022 related to the risk of an under-the-hood fire in approximately 39,000 2021 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs, with an additional 66,000 vehicles built between July 27, 2020, and August 31st, 2021, also affected.

The risk, which involves a potential high-current short on a printed circuit board, has the auto giant telling affected owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures. However, the car maker said they are still safe to continue driving. When the replacement parts become available in September, dealers will install them free of charge. There have so far been 21 reports of under-the-hood fires, 18 of these incidents involving rental vehicles, with one injury in connection with this issue, Ford said.
