Firefighters Battle Huge Fire at Converted RI Mill

Firefighters from several communities fought a large fire that ravaged a former mill that is being coverted into apartments in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, according to a report in the Providence Journal’s blog. Firefighters conducted defensive operations at the 450,000-square-foot structure, parts of which collapsed, and Pawtucket Chief WIlliam Sission commented that he was glad he did not commit firefighters to interior operations. Approximately 25 people were removed from the structure. Last year, the company involved with the conversion of the structure was fined after admitting to illegally allowing tenants to occupy apartments at the mill without proper fire protection.
