Dell Computer Recalls Batteries Due to Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C, — Dell Computer Corporation is recalling some 284,000 batteries for its computers because the batteries can overcharge, overheat, and possibly catch fire, according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). One incident of a battery�s recharging and causing minor property damage has been reported. No injuries were reported.

The recalled batteries are labeled �DELL� and �Inspiron 5000 Battery Module� and bear the number �99� or the series number �0051� or lower, and the letter �P� in the first line of the identification number that is on a colored sticker at the rear of the battery. They were included in Dell Inspiron 5000 and 5000e notebook-style computers and sold separately through catalogs and over the Internet from January 2000 through March 2001.

The CPSC advises consumers to stop using these batteries. A free replacement battery may be obtained by calling Dell toll-free at (877) 237-3355 or visiting its Web site at http://www.dell.com
