Code Council Names Veteran Firefighter, Officer as Fire Service Activities Director

The International Code Council has promoted Bruce Johnson, a 30-year fire service veteran, to Director of Fire Service Activities. He has been with the Council since 2007 as Government Relations Regional Manager with responsibilities in Northeast states. In addition to those duties, his new responsibilities include being the national principal point of contact for fire service activities and representing the Code Council at meetings with fire service organizations.

He also serves as Deputy Chief Fire Instructor at the Suffolk County (N.Y.) Fire Academy and as a College Instructor at SUNY-Empire State College. He holds an MBA and bachelors’ degrees in Fire Service Administration and Accounting along with several professional certifications. He is a past president and active member of the New York State Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association and a member of several professional fire service associations.

Prior to joining the Code Council’s staff, Johnson was Fire Marshal for Riverhead Town (Long Island, N.Y.) where he was responsible for fire code administration and managed the Division of Fire Protection. He gained building and fire code expertise serving on the New York State Technical Building Review Committee, and the International Code Council Building Code–Fire Safety and Fire Code Interpretation committees.

Johnson has extensive experience and knowledge in firefighting operations and tactics, incident command, fire service administration and emergency management. His fire service career highlights include Volunteer Firefighter and Chief in addition to Fire Marshal.

The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety, fire prevention and energy efficiency, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes, building safety codes developed by the International Code Council.
