Canon Fax Machines May Pose Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C.- A component failure in about 60,000 Faxphones manufactured by Canon U.S.A., of Lake Success, New York, may make them a fire hazard, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Canon U.S.A. is voluntarily recalling these combination plain-paper copiers and facsimile machines. Canon U.S.A. has received five reports of Faxphones catching on fire and causing damage to the machines. No injuries have been reported.

The machines involved in the recall are the Canon Faxphones with model number B640. “FAXPHONE B640” is written on the front of the machines. Serial numbers (on a silver label on the back of the machine) include UKK52923 to UKK55442, UKK60513 to UKK99999, and YKK02001 to YKK20000.

The machines were sold through electronics, office products, and computer stores nationwide from October 1999 through May 2001.

Anyone having one of these machines should immediately stop using it and contact Canon U.S.A. Inc. for a free replacement. Additional information is available from Canon at (888) 280-7858 between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. ET Monday through Friday, and between noon and 8 p.m. ET Saturday, or from the Canon Web site at http//www.cusa.canon.com/consume.
