Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada) firefighters have been banned from covering shifts for a cancer-stricken colleague, according to a news report.
CBC News reported that firefighters were picking up shifts for Tanner Brotzel, who is undergoing treatment for for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, since December when he was diagnosed. This allows Brotzel to continue to receive his full pay while he undergoes chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
The fire chief informed crews that any replacement requests for Brotzel’s shifts will no longer be approved, the report said.
Fire Chief Ernie Polsom told CBC News that the decision was made because there are benefits that exist to serve the employee in these situations.
