BIC Launches New Fire Safety Initiative

Some of life’s most memorable moments – blowing out birthday candles, family barbecues and get-togethers, or campfire stories with friends – all come to life with the flick of a flame. BIC, the leading manufacturer of lighters, wants these special occasions to be safe and is today announcing the launch of its Flick it SafelyTM initiative – a public service campaign about the importance of fire safety.

Flick it Safely was developed by BIC in partnership with Fireproof Children, and provides fire safety information, fire prevention tips and child education tools to parents and families, all of which can be found at www.flickitsafely.com. By teaming up with foremost educators in fire safety, BIC’s goal is to help consumers enjoy campfires, candles, grilling and other activities safely. This new initiative joins BIC’s existing fire-safety program, play safe! be safe!(r), which has helped educators teach fire safety skills to young children for more than 20 years.

“Our mission is to be our consumers’ trusted lighting partner for all of their lighting occasions,” said Sandra Levine, senior associate brand manager, lighter marketing at BIC. “For BIC, there is no compromising on lighter safety.  Every one of our BIC Lighters is child-resistant and passes more than 50 individual safety and quality checks before leaving our manufacturing facilities. With our Flick it Safely initiative, we are taking this commitment to safety a step further by helping people better understand how to use fire safely – from the moment they choose to purchase a BIC Lighter to the moment the birthday candles are blown out.”

BIC’s quality assurance criteria for its lighters meet or exceed the lighter safety standards established by ISO (International Organization for Standardization), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and all other government agencies. More than one million BIC Lighters are manufactured each day in BIC’s Milford, Conn. lighter manufacturing facility. The fuel cartridge in each BIC Multi-purpose Lighter is also made in the U.S.A. at the Connecticut facility.

“Through this initiative, we are providing families with valuable information that reinforces the importance of having a safe environment for all of life’s special moments.” said Dr. Robert Cole, President of Fireproof Children. “Fire safety is essential – from keeping lighters and matches safely out of sight and out of reach of children, to properly building and putting out a campfire.” For more information about fire safety, please visit www.flickitsafely.com.
