2002 Edition of the NEC issued by NFPA Standards Council

Quincy, MA— The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), through its Standards Council, has issued the 2002 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC). The new edition includes more than 300 significant changes to the 1999 edition.

Five new articles distinguish the new NEC: administrative provisions; transient voltage surge suppression, sensitive electronic equipment; fuel cells; and receptacles, cord connectors and attachment plugs.

Other modification include the following:

Articles have been sequenced in a more logical order, particularly in Chapter 3.

The metric system has been positioned in front of inch/pound units; soft conversions have been replaced with hard conversions–rounded metric numbers where exact number-usage would seem stilted.

The proposed new edition was developed by the National Electrical Code Committee and was recommended with amendments by NFPA’s membership in attendance at its World Fire Safety Congress and Exposition(tm) meeting in Anaheim, CA, in May.

At its scheduled meeting in San Francisco, the Standards Council, in accordance with NFPA rules, considered appeals related to the NEC, as well as the 27 additional documents voted on and accepted at the Anaheim meeting. Following resolution of the appeals, the Standards Council issued the 2002 edition of the NEC on July 13, with an effective date of August 3, 2001.
