Syracuse, N.Y. — A veteran of the Syracuse Fire Department will be promoted next month to one of the department’s highest positions, officials said.

Elton Davis, the deputy chief for fire prevention, on Sept. 25 will become the department’s executive deputy chief.

Davis will plan, organize and oversee firefighting and administrative operations. He, along with First Deputy Chief Daniel Downes, can also serve as acting fire chief.

Davis replaces Rick Kisselstein, who will retire Sept. 24 after 22 years with the fire department.

Fire Chief Michael Monds said in a statement that Davis has been “an example of dedication and safety” for the department.

“I could not be more confident in his abilities,” he said.

Davis has been with the department for 27 years, officials said. He has previously served as a lieutenant, captain and district chief, as well as in other, specialized roles. He was promoted in 2017 to deputy chief.
