Logansport Fire Department chief Rick Bair is stepping down to accept a position with the Century Career Center within Logansport High School.

“This is probably the hardest decision I’ve had to make,” Bair told the Board of Public Works and Safety during its meeting Wednesday. “I appreciate everything that everybody has done for me.”

Bair will be a member of the career center’s fire and rescue program. His final day as fire chief will be Friday.

Jason Miller will take over as the new fire chief on Monday. He is a veteran with the department, serving in many roles over the years.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to Mayor (Chris) Martin and his administration for entrusting me with the leadership of the remarkable men of our fire department,” Bair said. “I’m deeply appreciative of the unwavering support I’ve received from Mayor Martin and all the department heads of our city. Their commitment to teamwork has been instrumental in our collective success.”

Bair began his role as Logansport Fire Department chief in 2020. He is a third-generation firefighter with the city, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, former Fire Chief Bobby Bannon, and his father, Captain Richard Bair. He was hired on to the fire department on Dec. 26, 1998, and has held the positions of firefighter, training captain and assistant fire chief.

He is a certified EMT, fire investigator, hazmat technician and fire instructor. He’s also received training in fire officer strategy and tactics, advanced fire behavior, advanced incident command, technical rescue, wide area search and several other areas.

Bair also thanked the members of the fire department on Wednesday.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks for your hard work and unwavering dedication during my tenure as fire chief over the past four-and-a-half years,” he said. “I have witnessed the incredible accomplishments that can be achieved when we (get behind) a common goal.”

Mayor Martin thanked Bair for his service and said the department has been successful since day one because of him.

Bair then responded that it was successful because of the men behind him. As Bair exited, the entire room clapped for him.
