Tape Coding System

Tape Coding System

Colored tape is used to match equipment to its proper apparatus in the Wintersville, Ohio, Fire Department. Each vehicle is given a color code and that color of tape is placed on each piece of equipment stored on the unit. This has an advantage over painting a colored stripe or permanently marking the items because the tape color can be easily changed if the equipment must be moved, according to Assistant Chief W. Robert Herrington.

The color coding system was then expanded to add a white tape next to the colored tape to show the front line of each pair of mattydale preconnected 1 ¾-inch lines. In addition to the apparatus color code, the front nozzle has a white stripe.

If a nozzleman wants a pressure change on his line, he can quickly identify which line he has and radio the proper pump operator for the adjustment.
