Smeal Delivers Four Heavy-Duty Aerial Apparatus with GREEN POWER™ Technology to Canada’s Largest Fire Service, Toronto, Ontario

Smeal 105' Heavy Duty Aerial Ladder Fire Apparatus

SNYDER, NESmeal Fire Apparatus Co., a leading fire and rescue apparatus manufacturer, has delivered four 105’ (32M) heavy duty aerials equipped with Smeal’s GREEN POWER™ Anti-Idle Technology to the City of Toronto, Ontario. Smeal’s Canadian dealer, Safetek Emergency Vehicles, sold and delivered the order.  In 2011, Toronto became the first fire department in Canada to operate fire apparatus equipped with GREEN POWER systems and now operates a fleet of 10 GREEN POWER equipped apparatus.  With this delivery, Toronto Fire Services will have 49 Smeal™ fire apparatus in its fleet, 30 aerials and 19 pumpers.

“We truly appreciate Toronto Fire Service’s confidence in Smeal, Safetek and our GREEN POWER- equipped aerials.  These aerials provide industry-leading load ratings and water flow capabilities, along with a host of design features that make them highly effective and reliable,” said Smeal president Mark Huber. “GREEN POWER is a fine example of Smeal’s continuing commitment to technology leadership for the fire service.  This system provides great value to fire departments across North America in reducing fuel consumption and emissions.”

Under the leadership of Fire Chief/General Manager Jim Sales and with over 3,100 staff operating from 83 fire stations, Toronto Fire Services (TFS) is Canada’s largest fire department and the fifth largest in North America, responding to over 109,000 calls annually.

The goal of Toronto’s Consolidated Green Fleet Plan is to choose vehicles, equipment, fuels and practices that consume less fuel, emit less GHG and air pollution, meet the City Fleet’s operational requirements
and are both sustainable and economically viable.

“The Smeal GREEN POWER technology will contribute toward the City’s objectives because it has the capability of reducing both fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20 percent,” explained Huber.

The 105-foot (32M) heavy-duty aerials, built on Spartan Gladiator chassis, are equipped with Cummins ISX15 550-horsepower engines, Waterous CSUC20 2,250 gpm (8,500 L/m) single-stage pumps, QL-12™ peer-to-peer advanced electronics, a 136-foot ground ladder complement and GREEN POWER technology. The aerial ladder has a 750-pound (340 kg) tip load (wet or dry), and hot-dip galvanized torque box and stabilizers for superior corrosion resistance.  Each features an aluminum waterway with 1,500 gpm (6,000L/m) capacity, Smeal’s exclusive Ergonomic Hose Load (EHL™), Fire Truck Leveling Assist (FTL), electric positional waterway and “creeper” controls at the tip of the ladder.

One of the new aerial ladders will be on display in Smeal Booth #3536 at FDIC 2015 in Indianapolis, Ind., April 23 – 25, 2015.
