Rosenbauer secures bids with major metropolitan areas

Rosenbauer America has recently been awarded pumper apparatus bids from three major city Fire Departments throughout North America. The cities of Tempe, Arizona and Calgary, Alberta, Canada, along with the Miami-Dade Fire & Rescue Department in Florida will each have new custom pumpers built for their fleets.

Terry Swensen of Rosenbauer Southwest and Tempe’s Assistant Fire Chief, Jim Gaintner, reviewed the needs and specifications for the city that covers 40 square miles and protects nearly 200,000 citizens.

After discussing the needs of the six Tempe Fire Stations, Gainter and Swenson finalized the drawing and specs for two new pumpers. Some of the features of the trucks include a General fully-extruded aluminum body, Cummins ISM 435 HP engines, Waterous 1500 GPM rear mount pumps, 500 gallon water tanks, and Pneumax CAFS systems with both Class A and Class B foam with 40 gallon tanks for each.

The Calgary Fire Department will have three new Rosenbauer pumpers, as part of a five year contract that was awarded to Rocky Mountain Phoenix, the local Rosenbauer dealer.

Calgary is the home to the “Greatest Outdoor Show in the World,” the Calgary Stampede. The city sits in the foothills on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains; therefore, the pumpers reflect the climatic conditions they will be exposed to. The pump operator’s position is inside in the raised roof crew cab. Several other special options are designed for both extreme hot and cold weather operations.

The city has experienced some major growth in the past few decades which has in turn generated some real challenges for the fire department. They have recorded the highest runs for Canada, both from a fire station and individual apparatus standpoint, over recent times.

Another department that teamed up with Rosenbauer was Miami-Dade Fire & Rescue in Florida. They took notice of the company after the recent success of Rosenbauer’s 60′ and 75′ aerials.

Miami-Dade protects a population of over 2 million residents and needs to be prepared for anything. When they purchase an apparatus, they cover all of their bases by having their own Research & Development Bureau find the best apparatus. Division Chief Fernando Fernandez is head of the bureau and helps research all apparatus, equipment, and gear and develop specifications to best serve the needs of the department.

Because MDFR is a high volume call department, they appreciate the heavy-duty, extruded aluminum rescue style body from Rosenbauer.
