Pierce Manufacturing and Oshkosh Airport Products Celebrate Award-Winning Technology in Electric Fire Vehicles

Pierce Manufacturing and Oshkosh Airport Products supplier Dana Incorporated earned the 2024 Automotive News PACE Award for its innovative transmission system, which exclusively powers the Volterra Platform of Electric Vehicles in the fire apparatus and emergency vehicle sector.

Pierce and Oshkosh Airport Products supplier, Dana Incorporated, has earned the prestigious 2024 Automotive News PACE Award for its electro-mechanical, infinitely variable transmission (EMIVT) system. Dana Incorporated is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of propulsion and energy-management solutions. This cutting-edge technology exclusively powers the Pierce® Volterra™ Electric Fire Truck and the Oshkosh Airport Products Striker® Volterra Electric Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle in the fire apparatus and emergency vehicle sector.

The EMIVT system was displayed at FDIC 2024 and recognized at Automotive News’ annual awards ceremony in late April 2024 and represents a significant advancement in driveline technology. It is a multi-mode system which integrates high-voltage motors, a power-split transmission, and a low-voltage motor and inverter, offering seamless operation in engine-only, hybrid, and battery-only modes. This innovation reduces CO2 emissions while enhancing vehicle performance and reducing operational costs.

In a recent press release by Dana Incorporated, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Christophe Dominiak emphasized the benefits of the EMIVT system. “The Dana-designed solution showcases our ability to meet diverse customer needs across various powertrain configurations. It supports zero-emissions goals, reduces fuel consumption, and lowers production costs.”

The award-winning EMIVT system is in use in commercial vehicles and exclusively for Pierce and Oshkosh Airport Products in the fire truck and ARFF vehicle sectors, demonstrating its versatility and effectiveness in critical applications.

The 2024 PACE Awards, presented by Automotive News, celebrate automotive suppliers for innovation, technological advancement, and business performance. This year marks Dana’s ninth PACE Award, underscoring its reputation for industry-leading innovation.
