One Dead, Two Injured In Fire Truck, SUV Crash in OH

According to a report from WTOL, the Monroe Street and Auburn Avenue intersection has reopened after a crash between a SUV and a Toledo Fire & Rescue Department (TFRD) apparatus killed one person and sent two others to the hospital on Monday at 4:15 p.m. in Toledo, Ohio.

James Carter Jr., 43, who was driving the SUV, died when he hit Tower Ladder 17 as it was making a turn at the intersection, striking a utility pole, according to TFRD spokesperson Sterling Rahe. Firefighters on board began to care for the SUV passengers.

The two occupants had to be extricated, and Carter later died at the hospital. One of the passengers, 64-year-old Joseph Parr, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the fire truck, 51-year-old Stephen Swartz, was also injured. Two other firefighters on board were not injured. TFRD Chief Brian Boyd said there is extensive damage to the fire truck.
