FERRARA FIRE APPARATUS, INC. announced that the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) has added ten more Ferrara aerial ladders to its fleet. Coupled with the multiunit heavy rescue project, Ferrara Fire Apparatus now has contracts with the City of New York totaling more than $24 million. The vehicles are designed around the Ferrara LP-102—a low-profile, rear-mount aerial ladder. The new aerial trucks will be built on Ferrara custom chassis, featuring a stainless-steel split-tilt cab, a four-section rear-mount aerial ladder, and a stainless-steel body. The trucks will be built to accommodate New York City’s congested streets and to easily fit into the FDNY’s many historic fire stations. www.ferrarafire.com.

The AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS (ASCE) sent three technical assessment teams to Chile to learn from the performance of the region’s various infrastructure systems in the aftermath of the February 27 earthquake that killed 340 people. The Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute team explored the earthquake’s and tsunami’s impacts on the region’s seaports, near and distant to the epicenter. The Society’s Structural Engineering Institute team documented structures, both building and nonbuilding, and assessed whether changes to current codes and standards in the U.S. might be warranted. The Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering team examined infrastructure systems such as water and wastewater, transportation, electric power, ports, and schools and hospitals as well as gathered information that could aid in sustainable and resilient development efforts. www.asce.org.

After a nine-year effort, the VALLEY FIREMAN’S ASSOCIATION helped unveil a new firefighter monument in Howard Elmer Park in Sayre, Pennsylvania. The dedication ceremony was attended by more than 100 firefighters from around the area as well as association department and outlying mutual-aid department members. More than a dozen apparatus surrounded the park. The monument features a firefighter sculpted from solid granite atop a finely polished granite block base. The base is engraved with the list of the member departments, a dedication, and the Fireman’s prayer. A concrete observation patio is also planned at the site, and a time capsule will be planted beneath the patio. (570) 888-3465.
