APPARATUS DELIVERIES: TheWatkins Glen (NY) Fire Departmentreplaced a rescue truck

TheWatkins Glen (NY) Fire Departmentreplaced a rescue truck and a quick attack extrication vehicle with this CRIMSON rescue pumper. Chief Dominick Smith says it is first out in all areas except the business district. It has a curb side/rear pump panel to keep the operator protected from traffic.


Features/Equipment:

  • SPARTAN Gladiator Evolution chassis with 201½-inch wheelbase and 20-inch raised roof cab with eight seats and command center;
  • CUMMINS ISM 500-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • WATEROUS CSU single-stage, 1,500-gpm rear-mounted pump with HYPRO Foam Pro 1600 system, 1¾-inch front bumper line, three 1¾-inch crosslays, three-inch rear preconnect with TFT Blitzfire hand monitor, and AKRON Mercury Quick Attack monitor;
  • UPF 750-gallon water tank and 20-gallon foam tank;
  • command center at cab’s rear with desk, cabinets, and laptop computer with separate LCD monitor for MSA thermal imaging camera system;
  • ZOLL AED and medical cabinet under command desk;
  • 200-pound absorbent hopper in coffin compartment;
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and three wheel well sleeves for nine spare SCBA cylinders;
  • TNT rescue tools in front bumper with two hydraulic reels;
  • RAMSEY five-ton portable winch with four receivers;
  • three HANNAY reels (one air, two electric cord); and
  • light and power with WILL BURT Night Scan, three FRC floodlights (one on brow, two on body), and 14 WHELEN fixed scene lights (two on cab, 12 on body).

The Grand Haven (MI) Public Safety Departmentdesigned this ALEXIS rescue pumper with a shorter wheelbase than its other apparatus. Public Safety Director Dennis Edwards says the pump panel at the left/rear allows the operator to easily view the fire scene from both sides of the vehicle. Most components were placed behind closed doors.

  • UPF 750-gallon water tank and two 30-gallon foam tanks;
  • ladder storage under hosebed;
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and three wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;
  • rear REESE trailer hitch with POLARIS 6×6 ATV fitted with a 75-gallon skid unit. The hitch is also used as an anchor point;
  • rack for five hand extinguishers;
  • HOLMATRO rescue tools;
  • MEDTRONIC AED; and
  • light and power with SMART POWER 10-kw hydraulic generator, WILL BURT Night Scan, five AKRON Extenda-Lites (one on brow, two on each side of body), two WHELEN scene lights on rear, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

The Yadkinville (NC) Fire Department designed its W. S. DARLEY pumper with a large water tank for a strong initial fire attack and with CAFS to further conserve the water, explains Lieutenant Darrel Williams. The pumper is the first-out unit.

  • POLYBILT 845-gallon water tank and 30-gallon foam tank;
  • rear three-inch direct tank fill;
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and four wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;
  • ZOLL AED; and
  • light and power with ONAN six-kw hydraulic generator, SVI Command Light with backlighting on cab roof, two HAVIS SHIELDS brow lights, three FRC floodlights (two telescoping behind cab, one rear of hosebed), eight WHELEN scene lights (two on cab, six on body), and one HANNAY electric cord reel.
