The Portsmouth (NH) Fire Department uses this METALCRAFT boat for firefighting, rescue, and EMS, explains Assistant Chief Steve Achilles. It remains in the water year-round, operates in inclement weather on the open ocean or inshore, and can maneuver in tight harbors and shallow draft conditions. The crew of five includes a paramedic. The boat responds on mutual aid to more than 30 fire departments in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.


Features/Equipment:

  • Firestorm 30 model with 30.5-foot length, 10-foot, six-inch beam, and 20-inch draft;
  • CUMMINS QSB 380-hp diesel engine driving two 274 HAMILTON jets;
  • DARLEY PSM single-stage, 2,000-gpm pump with two 2 1/2-inch rear discharges, one-five-inch discharge to supply land-based operations, and an ELKHART Scorpion monitor;
  • roof/dive ladder; and
  • two push knees on bow.


Under the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) program, the State of New Jersey purchased nine heavy rescue trucks from RESCUE 1 for distribution to urban fire departments. Under the agreement, the departments may use the trucks but must respond with a full crew if summoned by USAR Task Force 1. Senior Planner Kevin Morrisey says the trucks were designed according to the inventory they carry, to provide maximum storage for their size.

Although the Columbia (SC) Metropolitan Airport Emergency Services purchased this CRASH RESCUE EQUIPMENT SERVICE quick-attack unit primarily for parking garage incidents, it is available for aircraft emergencies, freeway incidents, and structure fires at the airport, explains Assistant Chief Tim Stone.

The short wheelbase of the Glastonbury (CT) Fire Department’s MARION pumper allows a smaller turning radius in driveways and other tight spots, explains Chief Matt Nelson. The apparatus includes a larger water tank for rural areas and a powerful transmission for climbing hills.

The Corvallis (OR) Fire Department designed this HME pumper as a structural/rescue engine, according to Battalion Chief Jack McCann. The unit also responds to medical calls and includes a complement of service company equipment.

The Galax (VA) Fire Department covers rural and urban areas. Chief David Hankley says this SMEAL pumper, formerly a demo, has a short wheelbase for maneuvering on narrow county roads and a large pump to supply hydrant water in the city.
