APPARATUS DELIVERIES: The Clinton-Warren Joint Fire District in Clinton County, Michigan, replaced an older minipumper

The Clinton-Warren Joint Fire District in Clinton County, Michigan, replaced an older minipumper with this SUMMIT rescue style midi-pumper. Chief Bob Wysong says the vehicle can maneuver more easily through stopped traffic, an advantage since the district protects five miles of interstate highway. The unit also serves as a frontline pumper in some rural areas that are inaccessible to the larger apparatus.

In Missouri, the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport Fire Department has in service this OSHKOSH crash truck, an upgrade from an older, similar model. According to Captain Mike Newbury, the unit increases the department’s capability with more water, foam agent, and a dual-agent with reel; retains the utility of a piercing nozzle; and adds a FLIR camera on the articulating nozzle.

The Newfield (NY) Fire Departmentprotects a 100-percent rural area. Chief Kevin Wall says this E-ONE pumper is first out and also serves as a tanker. The four-wheel drive allows negotiation of long, narrow driveways with varied terrain, especially in winter.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, designed its FERRARA pumper (one of two) with four-wheel drive to handle mountainous terrain and snow conditions, which exist for up to eight months of the year, says Battalion Chief Van Ogami. The pump panels are covered to keep out water.

The Harlan (IA) Fire Department’s RESCUE 1 rescue truck is part of its Tri-County Special Operations, according to Chief Roger Bissen. The department needed a heavy rescue body since the truck is equipped for hazmat; water/ice, high-angle, trench, and confined space rescue; extrications, and fireground support.

The Gilead (NC) Fire-Rescue designed this MARION BODY rescue truck with a nonwalk-in body for extra storage, according to Chief Ben Reagan; this allowed it to carry the inventory qualifiying it as a state-certified rescue unit. The short wheelbase aids maneuverability and a hydraulic reel in the bumper is expedient at accidents.

Wilson. Although self-sufficient, it runs with an engine when staffing allows.

The Stayton (OR) Fire District designed its PIERCE quint with an aerial ladder instead of a platform to provide better visibility from the cab, extend the apparatus’s lifespan, and reduce maintenance and weight, according to Chief Jack Carriger. The quint covers the city and is first out for commercial fires, second out for all other structure fires.

Deerfield Beach (FL) Fire-Rescue has in service an E-ONE pumper and rescue truck. Deputy Chief Tony Stravino says that the pumper has full-depth compartments for equipment and EMS/ALS inventory. It also has slideout crosslays for ease of repacking. The squad is designed for advanced life support, extrication response, rehab, air supply, and scene lighting.

The Aledo (IL) Fire Department replaced a 65-foot aerial with this 75-foot ALEXIS quint. The town has multiple three-story buildings and commercial structures in industrial areas. According Chief Dennis Litwiler, the truck is second out to structure fires—the crew is responsible for ventilation and secondary attack. The cascade system provides extra air at major structure fires.

It protects a suburban setting with a diverse variety of residential, commercial, and industrial properties, says Chief James Baldis. Since the department is a member of the Capital Region Emergency Plan, the truck is also available for mutual aid.

The department believes that using a platform instead of a ladder increases safety at an elevated height and reduces the risk of climbing injuries.

Karros says the design of this RESCUE 1 rescue truck emphasizes auto extrication/stabilization as well as fireground support, lighting, and supplying spare SCBA cylinders.
