The Lewisburg (WV) Fire Department wanted the versatility of a pumper and a ladder truck in one vehicle. According to Captain Gary Workman, this SMEAL quint primarily responds as a ladder company to all automatic alarms and reported structural fires within the city limits.


Features/Equipment:

  • Sirius model chassis with 214-inch wheelbase and six-seat cab;
  • DETROIT Series 60 515-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • WATEROUS CS single-stage, 1,750-gpm pump with AKRON A and B foam system, 1 3/4-inch front bumper line, and three crosslays (two 1 3/4-inch, one 2 1/2-inch);
  • UPF 500-gallon water and 20-gallon foam tanks;
  • 75-foot aerial ladder with 750-pound tipload (500 pounds wet), 18-foot outrigger spread, and AKRON Stream Master ladderpipe;
  • POK roll-up compartment doors and two wheel well compartments holding six spare SCBA cylinders; and
  • light and power with ONAN eight-kw hydraulic generator, HANNAY electric cord reel, four FRC floodlights (two midship, two at aerial tip), and two FEDERAL scene lights on body.

The Washburn (IL) Fire Department designed its ALEXIS apparatus to double as a brush truck and a utility unit, according to Chief Jesse Erkman.

  • FORD F-550 4 × 4 chassis with 164.8-inch wheelbase and two-seat cab;
  • FORD 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine with automatic transmission and pump-and-roll capability;
  • WATEROUS CP-2 single-stage, 250-gpm pump with one-inch booster reel, AKRON Fire Fox bumper turret, and two electrically controlled spray booms;
  • UPF 400-gallon water tank with 2 1/2-inch rear fill;
  • INSTA-CHAIN automatic ice chains;
  • BOSS snow plow attachment; and
  • two AKRON Extenda-Lites midship, two UNITY spotlights on cowl, and two CODE 3 scene lights at upper rear of body.

The U.S. Government has placed in service three DARLEY pumpers and three tankers to provide fire protection at its largest military base in Kuwait. According to Darley spokesman Dave Metzger, the base needed 4 × 4s for off-road terrain and large water tanks because of limited water supplies.

  • INTERNATIONAL DT 530 300-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • DARLEY HM single-stage, 500-gpm PTO pump with three crosslays (two 1 3/4-inch, one 2 1/2-inch dead load);
  • PRO POLY 2,020-gallon water tank with rear 10-inch NEWTON dump valve; and
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors.

The Hamlin (NY) Fire District designed its E-ONE pumper as a first-out unit to all calls except extrications, in which it is second-out for scene safety, according to Assistant Chief Allen Smith. It has a large water tank for flexibility in initial attack, which is enhanced by foam capability.

  • E-ONE 1,000-gallon water and 50-gallon foam tanks;
  • ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors and six wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders; and
  • light and power with HONDA two-kw gasoline generator with floodlight and two HAVIS SHIELDS telescoping floodlights midship.

The Deepwater Fire Company in Pennsville, New Jersey, uses this PIERCE pumper as a first-out unit for structure fires, alarm activations, and MVAs, according to Chief Mark Ayares. The unit is designed for safety and ease of operations; heavy equipment is mounted low on the body and on pullout trays.

The Ludwig’s Corner Fire Company in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, designed its MARION pumper with a short wheelbase to access driveways in a primarily rural district that is rapidly becoming suburban, explains Committee Chairman Allen Cleaver. The large water tank and foam capability allow a strong initial attack while tankers are en route.

Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.
