The San Francisco (CA) Fire Department


operates its CENTRAL STATES quint at the San Francisco International Airport. Chief Raymond Balzarini says that the aerial device can access the top of every structure at the facility and elevated tracks of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) air train. The quint is also used as a crane to lower a water rescue craft into San Francisco Bay.

The Marion County Fire District 1 in Salem, Oregon


uses its MARION BODY WORKS, INC. rescue truck for extrication and patient packaging at accidents. It also provides support and truck services at structural fires since the district has no truck company, says Assistant Chief Bob Jung.

The Marion Heights (PA) Fire Department


purchased its KME pumper to replace a minipumper with a 1,000-gpm pump. President/Captain Ronald Coroniti says that the replacement pumper has more storage and seating space, maneuvers tight streets better, and fits the department’s budget.

purchased its SMEAL quint to replace an older truck with a shorter ladder, according to Chief Dennis Downey. The response area includes a commercial zone with a daytime population of 10,000.

The Provo (UT) Fire Department


placed five PIERCE apparatus in service: two 55-foot and two 105-foot quints and a rescue unit. The quints include two engines and trucks respectively instead of four 75-footers, which with single axles would have been overloaded as truck companies, according to Captain Kevin Gildea. All units have cabs equipped for rehab and ALS. The rescue is a haz mat and command unit with a nonwalk-in body for optimum storage.

received 34 Type 1 ambulances from P.L. CUSTOM EMERGENCY VEHICLES, INC. and one heavy rescue truck from RESCUE 1, a division of P.L. Custom). Captain John Petrovic explains the department favors the Type 1 vehicle for the easy motor access for maintenance and four-wheel drive for snowy conditions. Captain Joseph V. Brocato explains that the rescue truck is designed with a nonwalk-in body to handle an increased inventory, including collapse rescue equipment.
