The West Tuckerton Fire Company in Little Egg Harbor, N.J. received some help when it came to purchasing a new aerial platform. The developer of a 1,500-unit condominium and townhouse project contributed $140,000 towards the equipment, about one-fourth of the total cost; the township paid the remainder.

“It wasn’t something the township just turned over to us,” says Chief Ed Rowe. “We had to fight for it.”

The Spartan Motors Inc. unit has a 1,500-gpm Waterous pump with a color-coded pump panel, a 300-gallon fiberglass booster tank, and dual 1,000-gpm Akron deck guns. It also has an Onan diesel generator, 191 feet of center and side stacked ground ladders, and dual side-mounted Whelen Edge light bars.

The 85-foot aerial ladder will play an important role as the township’s growth continues, says the chief. There are several buildings of three or more stories in the township, and more are proposed: two additional nursing homes, and two four-story condominiums for senior citizens.

The crash fire rescue team at Standiford Field in Louisville, Ky., uses this triple agent unit as its quick attack piece.

The FireTec Enterprises Inc. unit, built on a Chevrolet Deluxe chassis, has four-wheel-drive and automatic transmission. It carries three kinds of extinguishing agents: Halon 1211; aqueous film forming foam; and dry chemical. There’s rear access to the water and agent reels.

Capt. Donald Churchman says the unit is also used as the airport’s command vehicle, and carries a full complement of radio equipment. It has trap doors built on top of it, so it can be serviced from the top.

The Upper Frederick Volunteer Fire Dept. (Montgomery Co., Pa.), which covers a rural area with no hydrant system, needed a replacement for its power wagon grass rig. But the rig to be replaced could out-perform some of the equipment the department was shown.

Eventually, the department did find something better. It purchased this Ottawa-Brimont Corp. four-wheel-drive brush/pumper unit, which can climb and descend grades of up to 60 percent, turn within a 17-foot radius; and crab steer—turn all wheels in the same direction—to 26 degrees. It has a Mack diesel Midliner engine and an Allison MT-643 automatic transmission.

The unit has an America Godiva rear-mounted 750-gpm pump and a Hale 120-gpm auxiliary pump. In addition to a 5-inch main rear intake, the unit has 3-inch intake and three 3-inch rear discharges.

After many years of using both a pumper and a foam pumper, Engine 5 of the New Haven (Conn.) decided to combine those capabilities in one unit.

The Sutphen minitower the company received in mid-1986 has a single-stage, 1500-gpm pump and an Edwards 300 foam pump. The unit carries 600 gallons of water and 400 gallons of 3 percent fluoroprotein foam.

The company protects a diverse area. Within its boundries are bulk flammable liquid storage tanks; interstate highways 91 and 95; an airport; and residential buildings. The unit’s 65-foot aerial ladder enables the company to apply foam to the top of the tanks.

“It’s multipurpose for the type of fires we could expect in the area,” says Lt. Michael Grant.

The minitower also features a preconnected 5-inch intake and two 6-inch side intakes; three 2W-mch supplementary and one 2½inch foam intake. There are six 2Vi-inch discharges, as well as a 3inch to the foam monitor on the cab roof and a 4-inch to the ladderpipe.
