The Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department, Newfoundland, Canada, uses this SUTPHEN SL 100 aerial ladder to protect the town, which includes an eight-story hospital and many older three- and four-story buildings. Chief Ed Kavanagh says it has a pump and can double as the department’s second engine, if needed.

Features/Equipment:

  • Monarch chassis with 236-inch wheelbase and six-seat cab with 14-inch raised roof;
  • CUMMINS ISM 500-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • HALE Qmax single-stage, 1,500-gpm pump with two 1½-inch crosslays and ELKHART handheld monitor;
  • PRO POLY 400-gallon water tank;

  • TNT Combo extrication tool;

The Port Alberni Fire Department, British Columbia, Canada, designed this FORT GARRY FIRE TRUCKS pumper as a first response unit to fire suppression and medical calls, says Captain Scott Borrows. The vehicle allows for ease of line selection, and the remote controlled monitor frees up a position at large fires.

Features/Equipment:

  • SPARTAN Gladiator chassis with 214½-inch wheelbase and 20-inch raised-roof cab with six seats;
  • CUMMINS ISM 500-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • WATEROUS CSU single-stage, 2,000-gpm pump with HYPRO Foam Pro 2002 system, 2½-inch front discharge (reduced to 1½-inch for trash line), three 1½-inch speedlays, two 2½-inch rear discharges (one preconnected to ELKHART Rapid Attack monitor), and AKRON DeckMaster monitor;
  • PRO POLY 900-gallon water and 24-gallon foam tanks;
  • AMDOR roll-up compartment doors and four wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;
  • 83 feet of ground ladders;
  • ONSPOT tire chains;
  • MEDTRONIC AED; and
  • light and power with HARRISON eight-kw hydraulic generator, five FRC floodlights (two each brow, telescoping midship, and rear and one HANNAY electric cord reel).

The Rochelle Park (NJ) Fire Department designed this AMERICAN LaFRANCE rescue truck with more space and seating than its previous truck and with preconnected tools, eliminating the need to change tools on scene, says Apparatus Officer Keith Danis. The roll-up compartment doors provide for getting equipment easier on highways. It is also used for fireground support.
