The Hidalgo County (NM) Fire Department needed a pumper/tanker quickly and found that the features on this MIDWEST FIRE TANKER demo met their needs, says Fire Marshal David Whipple. The department protects a large rural area.
Features/Equipment:
- FREIGHTLINER m2 106 chassis with 226-inch wheelbase and two-seat cab;
- CUMMINS ISL 350-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
- DARLEY LSP single-stage, 1,000-gpm PTO driven pump with two 1¾-inch crosslays;
- APR 3,000-gallon water tank with three 10-inch NEWTON dump valves that have 36-inch telescoping chutes, and a 2½-inch direct tank fill next to the rear dump valve;
- MIDWEST tip-down tank carrier with a 2,000-gallon FOL-DA-TANK; and
- six WHELEN scene lights on the body.
The Spearfish (SD) Volunteer Fire Department uses this SVI TRUCKS rescue unit to respond to all rescue calls except medical and rope rescues, says Second Assistant Chief Scott Carlson. The department combined inventory on a single vehicle for simplicity and streamlining.

- SPARTAN Metro Star chassis with a 173-inch wheelbase and six-seat cab with a 20-inch raised roof;
- 28-inch front bumper extension;
- CUMMINS ISL 9 450-hp diesel engine with an ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
- 16-foot nonwalk-in body with ROM roll-up compartment doors;
- two AMKUS rescue tools powered by an AMKUS pump system with hydraulic reel extensions capable of going up to 250 feet from the truck before switching to a portable unit;
- trench rescue equipment and shoring;
- four-bottle air cascade system with two-bottle BAUER refill system and storage for 14 spare SCBA cylinders; and
- light and power with an ONAN 30-kw pto driven generator, WHELEN brow and scene lights, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.
The Wilmington (NC) Fire Department designed this PIERCE pumper to protect its downtown area, says Assistant Chief Frank Blackley. The pumper has a system to provide Class A foam for fighting a factory fire and Class B foam for fighting a petroleum tank farm fire.
