APPARATUS DELIVERIES

The Detroit (MI) Fire Department uses this SVI rescue truck (one of eight) to respond to fires and motor vehicle accidents in which lives are in danger and to augment staffing, according to Ivan Ozment, superintendent and chief of apparatus. Six units were delivered initially; two with simo units were delivered later.

Features/Equipment:


SPARTAN Advantage chassis with 185-inch wheelbase and 10-inch raised roof cab with six seats;

CUMMINS ISC 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3060P automatic transmission;

• 18-foot walk-through body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors;

• spare SCBA bottle rack;

• three receivers (left, right, and rear) used for tie-off points (no winches are used);

HURST tools with two HANNAY hydraulic reels (the two newer trucks have simo units); and

• light and power with ONAN 20-kw PTO generator, eight WHELEN scene lights (two Model 810 on sides of cab, six Model 900 on body), six GFE recessed floodlights on sides and rear of body, and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

The Sea Girt (NJ) Fire Department designed this SEAGRAVE pumper with roll-up doors because of the department’s tight quarters. It has LDH capability and a larger water tank to allow for a better initial fire attack, explains Chief Ed Sidley.

The Mineola (TX) Fire Department designed its AMERICAN LAFRANCE rescue truck with a nonwalk-in body for maximum equipment storage, according to Chief David Stevenson. The unit operates as a heavy rescue and first responder unit, answering 90 percent of the department’s calls.

The Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland, designed its EMERGENCY ONE truck as a platform to provide greater safety for aerial operations and rescues, according to Captain Samuel I. Dansicker. The department has assisted living facilities, senior citizen high-rises, group nursing homes, and multistory apartments in its jurisdiction.

DETROIT Series 60 500-hp diesel engine with ALLISON HD 4060P automatic transmission;

• six sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;

HOLMATRO and AMKUS rescue tools with three reels (two hydraulic and one electric);

INTEC backup camera; and

• light and power with ONAN 15-kw PTO generator, nine HAVIS SHIELDS floodlights (two on each side of body, one at turntable, two behind platform, one in front, and one underneath platform), and two HANNAY electric cord reels.

The Defiance (OH) Fire Rescue responds this SMEAL quint on all first alarms in the city and as third-out for township runs, according to Chief Bill Wilkins. The ergonomic hose load (EHL) for the large-diameter hose (LDH) is a much appreciated feature because of limited staffing.

The Bristol (TN) Fire Department designed its PIERCE pumper with a raised roof for easy crew access and egress and an EMS compartment for medical runs, explains Senior Firefighter/Paramedic Tim Estes Sr.

Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.
