The United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is located in mountainous area between 6,300 and 7,300 feet in elevation. Chief Ernst R. Piercy says that its ROSENBAUER/CENTRAL pumper has a heavy-duty engine and braking power designed to handle this altitude.

The West Deer Volunteer Fire Company in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, responds its SMEAL pumper first out to all structure fires, MVAs, and haz mats, according to Captain Josh Wiegand. The unit also supports a quint, has a large generator for maximum lighting, and features a rear inlet for drafting and relay pumping.

The Walcott (IA) Fire Department specified its ALEXIS pumper with four-wheel-drive and pump-and-roll capability for on-and off-road response in its agricultural area, explains Chief Tim L. Iossi. The pumper also has a front bumper monitor for quick knockdowns of vehicle and cornfield fires.

The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department in Henry County, Tennessee, specified a large water tank on this PIERCE pumper to protect a rural area, according to Captain Patrick Petronico. The pumper has a topmount pump panel for operator visibility, especially on narrow county roads.

The San Juan County Fire District 2’s Orcas Island Fire Company in Eastsound, Washington, designed this SEAGRAVE pumper with a large water tank and CAFS to protect a rural area, explains Captain Paul Spencer. It also has a short wheelbase for maneuverability.

The North Syracuse (NY) Fire Department designed its SAULSBURY pumper with a large water tank because parts of the district (including two highways) have few or no hydrants, according to Lieutenant John Lisi, Jr.

The Huntsville (AL) Fire Department took delivery of three KME apparatus. The department designed the haz-mat truck for self-sufficiency, since it also is the regional haz-mat response vehicle for the Department of Homeland Security and is subject to deployment anywhere, according to Captain Dave Jacks.

The two pumpers are designed for multifunctional applications. One serves an urban area, performs rapid intervention duties, and a serves as a decon unit for the regional haz-mat team. The other unit protects a rapidly growing suburban area, responding to EMS, extrication, and mutual-aid calls.

The Telico (TX) Volunteer Fire Department designed its WESTEX unit with pumper and tanker capabilities, according to Lieutenant Josh Slovak. The pumper has side dump valves because the driver cannot see well enough to back up to a folding tank at the rear.

The Fairfax County (VA) Fire & Rescue Department designed this SVI haz-mat support unit with seating and storage identical to their haz-mat unit. Captain Milton L. Painter says this enables them to use both trucks to cover for each other with full crews and similar inventories.

The Eagle River Area (WI) Fire Department uses its DARLEY quick-attack unit to access lake homes where larger 4 × 2 apparatus cannot approach, according to Chief Patrick Weber. The unit also responds to wildland fires and will operate at MVA extrications in the future.

The Medina (OH) Fire Department chose this RESCUE 1 demonstrator unit because it provides adequate seating and a body to accommodate not only its present equipment but future acquisitions as well, according to Chief Mark Roberts.

The Cortland/Lancaster (NE) Fire Department designed this DANKO tanker with a large water tank to provide an adequate supply due to limited staffing in a jurisdiction that lacks hydrants, explains Chief Dave Niemeyer.

The Petersburg (NY) Fire Department designed its MARION rescue truck to serve as a command post and a rehab unit as well as fire, accident, and water search/rescue response, according to Chief Richard Snyder.

The Frankfort (KY) Fire & EMS Department has in service two SUTPHEN apparatus. According to Captain Dan Shouse, the pumper was designed for ease of operation. A short wheelbase aids maneuvering in the district and the midmount tower enhances positioning while providing a platform with maximum height.

The North Haledon (NJ) Fire Department’s first aerial ladder is this PIERCE quint. Chief Brian W. Laube says the suburban response area is adding new housing developments that have setbacks that warrant this type of vehicle. Roll-up compartment doors eliminate door obstructions to setting up the outriggers.

The top-mount panel allows the operator an optimal view to see operations and assist with duties around the pumper.
