The Peoria (IL) Fire Department replaced a smaller vehicle with this KME heavy rescue truck that is designed to address current and future response needs, according to Battalion Chief Gary Van Voorhis. The truck covers half the city, responding to all multiple alarms, haz mat responses, MVAs, and basic life support/trauma calls.

Features/Equipment:


• Predator MFD chassis with 178-inch wheelbase and 16-inch raised-roof cab with four seats;

CATERPILLAR C11 350-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;

• 18-foot nonwalk-in body with ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors, and four sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;

• six-bottle, 6,000-psi air cascade system with inside rack for 24 spare SCBA cylinders;

WARN front-mounted, six-ton winch;

• five HANNAY reels (two electric cord, two hydraulic, one air);

TNT rescue tools; and

• light and power with ONAN 25-kw PTO generator, and six FRC and six WHELEN scene lights.

The Washington (DC) Fire Department purchased its CRASH RESCUE EQUIPMENT SERVICE ARFF unit to respond primarily to helicopter take-offs and landings at various federal government locations, Chief Richard Moore explains.

FORD F-550 4 × 4 chassis with 176.2-inch wheelbase and four-seat cab;

This LDV Unified Area Command vehicle, delivered to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), offers space to adequately manage a major incident that warrants a gubernatorial disaster declaration. According to Jim Watts, IEMA’s chief of operations, this unit’s technology and work space will allow the unified commander and staff to fully integrate local, state, and federal response to the impacted jurisdictions.

• 53-foot overall length featuring two 21.5- × 3.5-foot and two 12- × 3.5-foot slide-outs, expanding the high-tech communications space by an additional 276.5 square feet for a total of 685 square feet;

• conference room with 22 chairs, phone/computer hookups, and 42-inch plasma TV;

• full galley and INCINOLET stainless-steel toilet system;

• Two GIRARD automatic exterior awnings.

The Edmond (OK) Fire Department’s FOSTER auxiliary rescue unit is a first responder intermediate technical rescue for the State of Oklahoma. It responds to all emergencies types, according to Battalion Chief John Gibbon, is used for roadway and railway extrications, and is also used for training.

• 179-inch length, 99.5-inch width;

LAMBARDINI 40-hp diesel engine;

AMERICAN AIRWORKS nine-cfm, 5,000-psi breathing air compressor with four-bottle cascade system and mobile EAGLE AIR Sidewinder containment;

• five HANNAY reels (two hydraulic, two electric cord, one air); and

• light and power with GETEC 20-kw diesel generator and two HAVIS SHIELDS pole-raise floodlights.

The Mount Holly (NJ) Fire Department replaced four older pumpers with three AMERICAN LA FRANCE pumpers. Chief Frank Smith Jr. says the newer pumpers offer more pumping capacity, thus maintaining the jurisdiction’s insurance rating. The units have topmount pump panels for safety and visibility and sizable generators for enhanced light and power.

UPF 850-gallon water tank;

ROBINSON roll-up compartment doors, four sleeves for storage of 10 spare SCBA cylinders, enclosed ladder storage; and

• light and power with LIMA six-kw hydraulic generator, four FRC floodlights (two midship and two at rear on tripods), and one HANNAY electric cord reel.

The East Haven (CT) Fire Department replaced a pumper with this MARION BODY WORKS quint to provide the jurisdiction a second aerial ladder, according to Assistant Chief Paul Cahill. It responds to fires, haz-mat emergencies, and MVAs.

R K 75-foot aerial ladder with AKRON Stream Master ladderpipe, 500-pound tip load, remote control operation, and 15-foot, six-inch outrigger spread;

• three wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders;

HURST rescue tools with HANNAY hydraulic reel; and

• light and power with HARRISON 10-kw hydraulic generator, two FRC midship floodlights, two WHELEN scene lights (one on each side of cab), and two HAVIS SHIELDS COLLINS FX-12 spot/floodlights at aerial tip.
