The Bainbridge Island (WA) Fire Department purchased this GENERAL SAFETY/METZ quint with a rear steering tag axle for maneuverability in accessing commercial structures and difficult-to-reach multiple dwellings of more than four stories, explains Chief Jim Walkowski.

The Metchoshin (BC) Volunteer Fire Department uses its SUPERIOR pumper as a front line engine. Chief Cal Beaton says it has a large water tank and Class A foam system to address the lack of hydrants in the department’s jurisdiction.

The Washingtonville (NY) Fire Department placed in service two FERRARA fire apparatus, a pumper and a quint. The pumper is designed to provide water supply, answer EMS calls, and respond second-due on mutual aid, according to Chief Engineer Glenn Smith. The quint, purchased as a demo, is designed to perform ventilation operations more effectively at area schools and senior housing.

The Peninsula Township (MI) Fire Department protects a rapidly growing agricultural/residential community. Captain Mark Cameron says this CSI tanker/pumper is designed with a short wheelbase and single rear axle for optimum mobility within confined subdivisions.

  • CSI stainless-steel 2,000-gallon water tank (with hosebed above) with six-inch rear fill valve; three NEWTON 10-inch stainless-steel dump valves (left, right, and rear); and three 21/2-inch drain valves (left, right, and rear), which allow nursing to an engine without use of the pump;
  • CSI tank rack with 2,500-gallon FOL-DA-TANK;
  • four TOMAR scene lights on sides and two WHELEN scene lights on rear;

The Coeur d’Alene (ID) Fire Department designed its H & W pumper to answer extrication, rescue, and medical calls, explains Engineer/Apparatus Coordinator Bob Shovald. The unit has rollup doors for safety at highway responses and has deep compartments for added storage.

The Mt. Holly (NC) Fire Rescue designed its SMEAL pumper with a discharge-free pump panel to eliminate operator distraction, injury, and interference, according to Assistant Chief John Calder. The pumper covers a mostly residential area and has a large tank for undeveloped areas.

The Brockway (PA) Fire Department designed this EMERGENCY ONE Side Stacker quint to operate on narrow and hilly roads in a district that is 90-percent rural and 10-percent suburban, according to Chief Dave Umbaugh.

  • Cyclone II chassis with 210-inch wheelbase and six-seat cab;
  • CUMMINS ISM 450-hp diesel engine with ALLISON HD 4060P automatic transmission;
  • HALE Qmax single-stage, 2,000-gpm pump with two two-inch crosslays (13/4-inch hose);
  • EMERGENCY ONE 500-gallon water tank;
  • 75-foot aerial ladder with 550-pound tip load, 16-foot outrigger spread, and 1,000-gpm waterway with AKRON Stream Master ladderpipe (fed from pump or four-inch rear intake);
  • ROBINSON rollup compartment doors; and
  • light and power with A.M.P.S. eight-kw PTO generator and two HAVIS SHIELDS floodlights behind cab.

The English (IN) Fire District designed this SVI rescue truck with a short 27-foot overall length for maneuverability in the district’s somewhat hilly terrain. Assistant Chief Mike Benham says the truck replaced an overweight vehicle. The unit provides extrication, basic life support (BLS)-nontransport, and fireground support. The new rescue truck also responds to rescue and haz-mat incidents, Benham added.

Features/Equipment:

  • INTERNATIONAL 4800 4 2 4 chassis with 172-inch wheelbase and cab seating for three (most firefighters respond in their private vehicles);
  • INTERNATIONAL 530E 300-hp diesel engine with ALLISON MD 3060P automatic transmission;

  • light and power with ONAN 25-kw PTO generator, eight HAVIS SHIELDS floodlights (four recessed on sides of body, two tripod on rear, and two telescoping on front of body), and two HANNAY electric cord reels.
