The Huntingburg (IN) Volunteer Fire Department


Designed its EMERGENCY ONE nonwalk-in rescue truck to handle a variety of incidents, ranging from heavy rescue to light fire suppression, Chief Glen E. Kissling says. The department protects a 45-square-mile area that is 20 percent urban and 80 percent rural and has a population of 8,500.

Purchased this AMERICAN LAFRANCE rescue truck for self-sufficiency, according to Chief Thomas J. Petrovic, since volunteer fire service personnel shortages limit the availability of mutual-aid companies’ equipment. The response district includes heavy industry and a proposed highway system that warrants a rescue vehicle, which also provides mutual aid. Braddock occupies a 0.8-square-mile area along the Monongahela River and has a population of 4,500. It has many closely situated dwellings, some of which are 100 years old.

Purchased this KME pumper tanker for use in hydranted and rural areas, according to Chief Patrick McGuffin. Since only 35 percent of the jurisdiction is hydranted, all of the department’s engines are pumper tankers. The apparatus includes a foam system because of the presence of hazardous materials used in local industries and to protect Interstates 69 and 94, which are main routes to Canada. The 36-square-mile response district of 8,500 includes residential, rural, commercial, and industrial properties; another 50 square miles are protected by contract.
