APPARATUS DELIVERIES

Perry, Georgia, the county seat of Houston County, has a population of 12,000. It is the home of Georgia’s National Fair Grounds and Agri-Center. Besides agriculture, Perry is characterized by light and heavy industry and commercial structures. Since Highway 1-75 passes through it, Perry also has a tourist trade.

Fire Chief Gary L. Hamlin says the pumper was the mixed paid and volunteer department’s first in 20 years. He says he tried to specify the pumper from a “firefighter’s point of view” and feels he accomplished it.

The pumper is a first-out attack unit. It carries 750 gallons of water and has two 1 3/4-inch and one 2 1/2-inch rear attack lines plus an Akron Apollo monitor fed by a three-inch feed pipe and equipped with a 500to 1,250-gpm nozzle.

The unit was built by KMF on a Renegade tilt-cab chassis with seating for six. It has a 150-inch wheelbase and is powered by a Cummins, 8.3-liter, 300-hp. diesel engine with an Allison MT-647 automatic transmission. It has a Hale, single-stage, 1,250-gpm pump.

■ The Fire Department of Coldwater, Michigan, provides both city and rural fire protection to a population of 17,000 and provides rescue services for all of Branch County.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Richard Sherman, the paid, oneall fire department wanted a versatile unit capable of acting as a pumper or a ladder truck The Ladder 2 purchased has a stainless steel body to increase the longevity of the vehicle. The truck was built by American IjFrancc on a Century 2000 chassis It has a 194-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 390 inches It is powered by a Detroit 8V 92TA, DDECI1, diesel engine with an Allison HT-” tl automatic transmission. The vehicle has nine tool and equipment compartments.

Tlie unit has an American la France Twintlow two-stage, 1,500gpm pump and carries 500 gallons of water. A four-inch intake for the ladder only has a five-inch Storz connection. This pipe feeds dual four-inch waterways along the aerial ladder terminating with an Akron Gemini ladderpipe, electrically controlled and equipped with a 1,000-gpm nozzle. The truck has a 50-foot fiber optics remote control for the ladder and nozzle, which also can be controlled from the turntable and the pump panel. The 75-foot steel aerial ladder has a 500-pound tip load and requires a 16-foot outrigger spread.

Two 1 ‘/-.-inch lines and one 2’/2-inch line are located in crosslays; water supply is accomplished with 875 feet of five-inch and 400 feet of three-inch hose, carried on board. ■ In Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, the Avenel Fire Department protects nearly 20,000 residents and a wide variety of industrial and commercial properties, several public schools, a maximum-security prison, and an acute-care hospital facility. The largest industrial properties are surrounded by undeveloped meadows, garden apartments, and other dwellings.

Captain William J. Gotto says the department’s Emergency One Hush pumper provides low noise levels and room for seven firefighters with SCBAs. handlights, and forcible-entry tools. The vehicle has 12 cabinets, providing 57.5 cubic feet of storage space, plus four SCBA bottle storage sleeves in the rear wheel wells.

The unit has a Hale single-stage, 1.500-gpm pump and carries 750 gallons of water and 1,000 feet of five-inch and 800 feet of three-inch hose. Four 1 ¾-inch preconnected attack lines and two front-bumper “jumplines” are carried. A rear five-inch discharge is operated by a slow-operating manual valve at the pump panel. The pumper can supply and receive water through hose of various sizes, using both permanently mounted and portable adapters and suction valves. The unit has a demountable Elkhart “Stinger” monitor.

Two 500-watt telescoping quartz lights and a cabinet-mounted electric reel are powered by a three-kw Onan generator with a remote starting system on the top-mount pump panel.

Safety features include a beacon and Crossfire lights with intersection-approach strobes on the vehicle’s sides.
