The Chinchilla Hose Company in South Abington Township, Pennsylvania


designed its SAULSBURY rescue pumper primarily for rescue but also included attack engine capabilities, according to Chief Engineer Dean S. Faraday. The unit complements the department’s other two pumpers and replaces a 1974 rescue. It has modern equipment and additional pump and storage capacities. The 9.5-square-mile response district of 10,000 is primarily residential with commercial and light manufacturing occupancies. The company covers the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Interstate 81, and U.S. Routes 11 and 6.

The Yellville (AR) Fire Department


replaced its small, aging rescue truck with this AMERICAN FIRE & RESCUE unit, which carries extra medical and firefighting support equipment. Chief Billy J. Evans says the city and rural districts supported the department financially in acquiring the new vehicle. The department is responsible for a 55-square-mile jurisdiction of 3,000 and responds to extrication calls within a 355-square-mile area.

The Columbus (OH) Public Safety Department’s Fire Division


placed 10 SUTPHEN pumpers in service. Captain Larry Barton says the division chose a commercial chassis because it was less expensive than a custom chassis, enabling the division to purchase more apparatus. Columbus occupies 190.9 square miles and has a population of 657,487.

The Nickerson (NE) Rural Fire District’s DANKO Enterprise 2000


tanker complements a 1,000-gpm pumper and a 2,500-gallon tanker. Assistant Chief Wayne Jacobsen explains that the rural district’s hard surface and unpaved roads have no hydrants. The tanker has a short wheelbase for easy maneuvering and a foam system for response to motor vehicle accidents. The 90-square-mile district has 380 residents.

The San Bernardino City (CA) Fire Department


placed in service seven PIERCE paramedic engines, part of an order of 11 apparatus that included wildland vehicles and an “All-Steer” aerial ladder truck. Battalion Chief Mike Alder says the department serves about 200,000 residents in a diverse area of 64 square miles, including 19.5 square miles of urban/wildland interface. Facilities protected include a railyard, an international airport, the county seat, a jail, malls, a state university, and several low- and high-rise buildings. The pumpers have short wheelbases for maneuverability.
