Seven of these FMC pumpers have been delivered to Stations 1, 13, 32, 33, 34, 35, and 41 of the San Antonio (Texas) Fire Department.

According to Assistant Chief Charles Anaya, the department also operates 50 pumpers, 20 aerial trucks, six brush trucks, two snorkels, and two crash trucks.

The new units are constructed on a Spartan chassis and have Detroit 8V92 diesel engines with Allison HT-740 automatic transmissions. Each has an FMC Ram Model 1,170 single-stage 1,000gpm pump and carries 500 gallons of water.

An Akron heavy stream appliance, suitable for fixed or portable use with a 500-gpm nozzle, is mounted ahead of two booster reels, which carry 200 feet of ¾-inch hose each.

This Bronto Skylift 91-foot articulating platform was put into service at the Thunder Bay (Ontario) Fire Department in February. It was built by Anderson Engineering and is mounted on an International Harvester CO1950B chassis.

According to Deputy Chief Ted Mill, the truck is a great asset for exterior access to the buildings and industrial complexes in the department’s protection district.

The main industry in the area involves grain production, which is susceptible to explosion. The elevators are 80 feet high, so the 91foot platform is effective for emergencies in these occupancies.

There are also 50-foot fuel storage tanks in the area. The platform allows access to the tops of these to supply foam solution to extinguish a fire.

Chief Mill says the third-section boom provides more versatility and access than the department’s previous truck, which was only two sections.

The truck has a Hale QSF 1,250-gpm single-stage pump and a 420-gallon water tank. The apparatus is powered by a Detroit 6V 71 diesel engine with Allison MT 644 automatic transmission.

The department also operates 11 first-line pumpers, three standby pumpers, two tankers, and two rescue trucks.

This Saulsbury heavy-rescue unit was placed in service in May 1986 at the Lutherville (Md.) Volunteer Fire Company. It replaces a 1970 heavy squad rescue truck.

According to Company Engineer Bob Baron, the truck’s National Crane Model 437 can pick up any car on the road in full reach. It also has two floodlights that are attached to the end of the boom and can be used as an elevating floodlight tower. The crane can also be used as a water tower.

In addition, the crane can be operated using a remote control with a 40-foot cable and control box. This allows the operator to be closer to the actual switch while directing the crane.

The Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company is the first-due squad in a 200-square mile area, and it covers more than 40 miles of interstate highway. The company responds to more than 600 calls a year.

The truck is built on a Mack Model MR chassis and has a Mack 300 Series diesel engine rated at 285 hp. It has an Allison HT 740 D transmission.

In addition to this truck, the company operates one 1,250-gpm pumper and one 1,000-gpm pumper.

Stations 2 and 5 of the Panama City (Fla.) Fire Department each received a quick-attack American Eagle 300-gpm pumper in October 1986.

According to Captain James McNiel, these pumpers improve the department’s response time and ability to maneuver on the scene because they’re smaller and lighter in weight than the pumpers they replaced.

The majority of fire incidents in the area involve residential structures. “Hopefully, the quicker response we have with these trucks will allow us to keep a small fire small,” McNiel says.

Each truck is built on a GMC chassis and has a Flale CBP-3 pump and a 300-gallon water tank.

The Panama City Fire Department also operates five 1,250-gpm pumpers. It has two 1,000-gpm pumpers and two 750-gpm pumpers in reserve.
