■ The community of South Amboy, New Jersey, is about 1.3 square miles with a population of 10,000. It includes a five-story senior citizens building, three local schools, and a hospital. Fire Chief Thomas J. Gorman explains that since the town is in the process of redeveloping a parcel of land with the possibility of high-rise buildings, the apparatus best suited the community’s needs.

The unit is built by Seagrave on a JE chassis with a 2-door cab and has a 228-inch wheelbase. The 85-foot articulated platform is built by Snorkel Economy and has an 850-lb. payload capacity with a 96-inch outrigger spread.

■ The city of Clinton, Tennessee, covers an area of 8.8 square miles and has a population of 10,000. It has a four-block business district and a separate industrial district. The fire department operates out of two stations with fire apparatus utilizing 16 full-time firefighters and 25 that are paid/on-call.

Fire Chief Mike Warwick states that this is the department’s first elevating device. The sizes of the town’s buildings do not warrant an aerial ladder or elevating platform but are large enough to rule out a 35-foot ladder for roof access.

Clinton has placed in service a 55-foot Readi-Tower mounted on a pumper built by Quality Mfg. on a Ford C-8000 tilt-cab chassis. The vehicle has a wheelbase of 20a inches, and its cab seats five.

The unit has a Waterous, two-stage, 1.250-gpm pump and carries 500 gallons of water. Three connections at the rear of the apparatus are dual purpose and can be used either as intakes for the elevated waterway or as disc harges when the waterway is not used. The boom nozzle, which is a 1,000-gpm Elkhart Select-O-Matic. is fed by two 2 j-inch waterpipes. The tip of the ladder is rated for a 500-lb. payload, and the outrigger spread is three feet from each side of the vehicle.

The hosebed carries 1.200 feet of 3-inch hose, and there are seven tool and equipment compartments on the body. Over the pump are two trays for preconnected 1! 5-inch attack lines. Other equipment carried includes a Winco, 5-kw gasoline generator, six MSA L’ltraLight SCBA. and six spare cylinders (Photo by Jay Thomson.)

■ Harrells, North Carolina, is a small rural community with a water system that has 100,000 gallons in an elevated tank and eight hydrants. There are two schools and three churches close to these hydrants.

“we thought that 5-tnch hose would benefit us,’ says Chief George D. McGill. Consequently, their pumper was designed to carry 1,050 feet of 5-inch hose as well as a 1,000-gallon water tank. With the body height of such a vehicle, a top-mounted pump control panel is featured to provide high visibility for the operator.

The pumper was built by Grumman on a Ford F-800-D chassis with a 216-inch wheelbase. It has a Waterous, two-stage, 1,250-gpm pump and a 5-inch intake through the front bumper and a 21 .-inch intake at the rear.

■ The cits of Princeton, Kentucky, covers about 30 square miles and has a population of 7,500. Assistant Chief Brent A. The 25-member volunteer department realized both needs when it purchased an Emergency One pumper with 50-foot Tele-boom.

The unit is mounted on a Protector chassis, and it has all-aluminum construction and seating for four within the 4-door cab. Air pack brackets arc mounted in the two rear jump seats. The boom has an Akromatic 1,000-gpm remote control nozzle, and an axe and pike pole also are mounted at the top of the ladder. Boom discharge is measured by a Span Flominder.
