The Chicago Fire Department’s Peter Pirsch Co. 100-foot aerial stationed at Truck Company 4 merges something old with something new.

The truck has a new Ford C-8000 chassis, all-aluminum compartmentation, and a fully enclosed crew cab. Its ladder had been midmounted on a Mack C85 chassis; on the new apparatus, the refurbished ladder (originally built in 1966) is rear-mounted.

“The ladder is in good shape,” says Lieutenant Jack Connors. “It’s been tested and has passed the tests. We wouldn’t use it if it hadn’t.”

The aerial unit was delivered to Truck Company 4 in July; it’s one of four Peter Pirsch units going to the department.

Ocean View, a section of Norfolk (Va.) along the Chesapeake Bay, is primarily composed of threeand four-story frame beach homes, condominiums, and apartment buildings. There’s not much clearance between these buildings, so Station 13 of the Norfolk Fire Department needed an apparatus able to deliver large quantities of water and an elevated stream quickly.

The department chose a Pierre Thibault unit, a 1,000-gpm pumper with a 51-foot water tower, which is also rated at 1,000 gpm. There are three 1 ½” preconnects in the mattydales measuring 300, 200, and 100 feet. The rear hose compartment carries 1,000 feet of 5I inch high-volume supply line, along with another 500 feet of 3i inch hose for master streams.

A pull-out step located under the pump panel allows the pump operator easier access to controls.

The Nags Head (N.C.) Fire Department’s new aerial unit was purchased to help firefighters keep up with the community’s growth.

Nags Head, located on the Tar Heel State’s Outer Banks, is a popular vacation spot. There are already a few buildings that would require the use of an aerial, says Lieutenant Lowell Spivey, but others, namely hotels and condominiums, are in the construction or planning process.

The Emergency One 110-foot aerial unit’s Hurricane chassis features an all-aluminum contour cab, a Detroit Diesel 8V92TA engine, an Allison HT740 automatic transmission, and a 215-inch wheelbase. The four-section aerial device is equipped with a twoway intercom and quartz lights at the tip.

The department, which has eight paid members and 22 volunteers, received the unit in mid-November and placed it in service in December.

The New Kingstown (Pa.) Fire Company’s new W.S. Darley & Co. pumper helps a busy department meet its coverage area’s needs.

A 1500-gpm pumper was delivered to the department in early June, replacing a 1973 Darley pumper. The pump is two-stage; there’s a top-mounted pump handle. The apparatus carries 1,200 feet of 5-inch hose; 850 feet of 1 ¾-inch hose; 250 feet of 2 Vi-inch hose; and 300 feet of 3-inch hose.

Much attention w’as given to light placement on the apparatus: There are five 110V telescopic lights, including one through the cab roof; and strobe lights on the side. Cross-fire lights in the bumper are at passenger car height.
