Retired FDIC Drum Major Passes Away

Bobby Halton and Clayton Thomas

FDIC International is sad to learn that Clayton Eric Thomas, Drum Major Emeritus of the Indianapolis Firefighters Bagpipe Band, passed away on January 31, 2023, at the age of 77.

After graduating from high school, Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served honorably for six years, rising to the rank of ABHAN (Seaman 3).  After serving, he became a firefighter with the Indianapolis Airport Authority Fire Department. He retired in 2000 after 42 years. He was a member and director of the IFD Pipe & Drum Corp; the American Legion Post 182; and many other clubs and organizations.

From the Pipes and Drums Facebook page: “The Indianapolis Public Safety Pipes and Drums is brokenhearted in sharing the passing of our founder and Drum Major emeritus, Clayton Thomas.

Clayton, and his passion for the fire service and its traditions, began organizing this band to honor our fallen brothers and sisters in public safety. Together with the help of several of our founding members, he created this organization that is still deeply rooted in the brotherhood of music.

“Clayton made possible the friendships each of our pipers and drummers have created with other pipers and drummers from across the country and even the world. His sometimes quiet and gruff exterior was a façade when you realized how big his heart was and how loyal, loving, and giving he was.

“His memory and legacy will live on forever with the Indianapolis Public Safety Pipes and Drums, the FDIC Mass Band Pipes and Drums, and the other organizations who were blessed to have Clayton a part of.

“Clayton, you will be missed, as you were loved by all who knew you. Your time here left an impact on so many lives; one can only hope to have the same legacy when we leave this world. May God bless you in Heaven with pipers and drummers at the pearly gates awaiting your arrival with open arms.”

Friends may call from 4pm until 8pm on Monday, February 6, 2023, and again from 11am until 1pm on Tuesday, February 7th at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington St, Indpls).  Funeral services will follow Tuesday’s visitation, beginning at 1pm, at the funeral home.  Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Military Honor Guard.  A flag presentation will be provided by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Fire Department.  Entombment will be in Washington Park East Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Clayton’s memory may be made to: The Wounded Warrior Project.
