FDIC 2014: Firefighting in Modern Apartment Buildings

Dallas (TX) Deputy Chief Stuart Grant will present “Modern Apartments: New Challenges for Today’s Firefighters” at FDIC 2014.

Apartment buildings built in urban areas represent a unique problem for firefighters. They are multiple stories high and occupy large areas, sometimes several city blocks. Since some of the features of these buildings are similar to those of high-rises, some tactics used in high-rise fires can be used in these structures. On the other hand, these apartments are constructed of lightweight components and do not have the fire-resistive construction of high-rises. These buildings have restricted access and present unique rescue profiles. The inherent features, good and bad, and how to operate in their presence are discussed. Students will learn how to make decisions at these fires while keeping firefighters safe.

STUART GRANT, CFO, MIFireE, a 35-year veteran of the fire service, is a deputy chief with Dallas (TX) Fire Rescue, where he supervises the Special Operations Division. He is certified as a master firefighter and fire instructor with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He is a task force leader for Dallas’ Urban Search and Rescue Team (TX-TF2). He has two associate degrees and a bachelor’s degree in fire administration.
