>> The three Regional Strategy Committees (RSC) of the NATIONAL COHESIVE WILDLAND FIRE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY (COHESIVE STRATEGY) completed Risk Analysis Reports identifying strategies for addressing wildland fire management risk in their respective regions. The reports contain key elements that can be integrated into strategies for addressing the shared goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy: resilient landscapes, fire-adapted communities, and response to wildland fire. Each RSC is comprised of representatives from federal, state, local, and tribal governments and nongovernmental organizations with interests in wildland fire management. >> The INSTITUTION OF FIRE ENGINEERS-US BRANCH (IFE) received $13,840 as part of the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety and Security Institute. Through the grant, the IFE will coordinate the production of a book designed to assist survivors and families of fallen firefighters with their grief process. The Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety Grants aim to support safety education and training programs for first responders, their families, and the general public in the United States and Canada. >> The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA) updated its award-winning Learn Not to Burn (LNTB) preschool program, which teaches young children about fire safety. Updates to LNTB feature revised teacher lesson plans and parent/caregiver home link activities. For more than 40 years, LNTB has introduced the basics of fire safety to children with a focus on positive, empowering messages. Primarily taught in schools, LNTB’s program lessons are most appropriate for four- and five-year-olds, but they can be used for kindergarten children as well. >> STIHL INC. provided a scholarship fund through the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD) Leadership School at the Oglebay National Training Center in West Virginia. The scholarship affords 15 state park staff from across the country the opportunity to participate in this school. For the past five years, STIHL has enabled more than 50 park personnel from more than 15 states to attend. >> The NATIONAL VOLUNTEER FIRE COUNCIL’s (NVFC’s) Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund is taking donations to help volunteer firefighters affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund provides stipends of $250 to help volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel meet expenses in the wake of a state- or federally-declared disaster. Volunteers must have suffered an uninsurable loss in excess of $5,000 and be from an NVFC member state as an individual or department member of the state association. All contributions go to providing assistance to volunteer firefighters and emergency medical responders impacted by disasters. The NVFC donates all administrative costs associated with the fund.
